For many thousands of years, this most striking representative of the quartz family has been a jewel coveted by princesses. Moses described it as a symbol of the Spirit of God. In popular belief, the amethyst offers protection against drunkenness. In the Greek word 'amethystos' translates as 'not intoxicated'.
The amethyst not only had a firm niche in medicine; it was also esteemed as a stone of friendship. It was thought to put the wearer in a chaste frame of mind by symbolizing trust and piety. The amethyst came to occupy a very prominent position in the ornaments of the Catholic clergy over the centuries. It was the stone of bishops and cardinals; we find it in prelates' crosses and in the so-called Papal Ring.
The most important deposits are in Brazil, in the 'Palmeira' amethysts of Rio Grande do Sul and the 'Maraba' amethysts of Para but also in Zambia, Namibia and other African countries.
Generally, amethyst from South America tends to be available in larger sizes than African amethyst but has the reputation for having a better, more saturated, colour. Very dark amethyst, mostly in small sizes, is also mined in Australia.
Traditional birthstone for the month of February.

How to match a cufflink to your shirt (and tie)?
A few basics tips that will help you refine your approach to picking out some winning shirt, tie and cufflink combinations.
Combination 1: Solid-on-Solid
Let's touch on a classic combo: the solid shirt, tie and cufflink combo:
|
Avoid wearing a light solid shirt with a light solid colour cufflink. Furthermore, never wear a tie that is the same exact colour as your shirt.
Combination 2: Solid-on-Pattern
Going with a solid-on-pattern requires a bit more thought than just matching solids. In fact, a solid colour cufflink on a patterned shirt is one of the easiest ways to work patterns into your outfit. The simple but key tip to pulling this off: match the colour of your cufflink to the colour family of one or more of the colours in your shirt pattern.
Above all, remember this: learn these as simple guidelines to form your own stylistic expression. Play around with different combinations and above all else, don't be afraid to discover and express something unique!
As Oscar Wilde once said, "You have to be yourself, everyone else is taken."
